Water Intrusion – Hurricane IAN

On the morning of September 28th, 2022, a Category 4 hurricane loomed over the Gulf of Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph, making it just short of a Category 5. Later that day, Hurricane Ian brought its intense winds, heavy rainfall, and catastrophic storm surges to southwestern Florida, near Cayo Costa. After crossing over the Florida peninsula, where Ian had weakened to a tropical storm, it strengthened again over the water to a Category 1 hurricane and made a second landfall near Georgetown, South Carolina.

A National Quick Service Restaurant had seven of their restaurants located in the predicted path of Hurricane Ian, and four of those seven locations were impacted. Those four QSR locations sustained a combination of roof damage and water intrusion, impacting their ability to operate and serve their community. Two of these locations were able to avoid business interruptions due to ServiceMaster Recovery Management’s ability to isolate the workspace where restorations were being made, allowing daily operations to continue.  Due to our extensive franchise network and experience in advanced equipment staging during CAT events, we were able to inspect, provide an estimate and begin the repairs for all four QSR locations by 10/01/22 – just three days after the hurricane made landfall.

ServiceMaster Recovery Management provided a temporary roof solution that continued to allow water extraction and mitigation work for one location that suffered extensive roof damage. Thanks to our local command centers, we are staffed with experts in every field and have the resources and equipment needed to quickly respond to any size loss and start restoring business as usual.

ServiceMaster Recovery Management has been on location for every named storm in the United States over the past 20 years.  Restoring a property to its pre-loss state requires a lot of moving parts and is quite complex. From scheduling to equipment, personnel management to site logistics, each aspect needs to be managed correctly as well as documented properly and communicated in an effective manner. Our standardized approach ensures every project follows the same protocols and procedures at each location. Our approach saves the client time and eliminates confusion. In addition, our standardized reporting means each location receives client communications in the same format no matter how many properties are involved.

For commercial properties, the damage extends beyond the physical structure as every minute of down time leads to additional loss of revenue.  ServiceMaster Recovery Management was able to have all four QSR  locations restored [and operating as normal by 10/13/22, significantly reducing the overall business interruption. Most importantly, the SRM Account Management team reviewed initial estimates to show a cost savings of more than 22K.

Hurricanes are responsible for billions of dollars of damage every year in the United States. They are particularly destructive because they can cause wind damage, flooding, and structural failures. On top of that, they often knock out infrastructure such as power and fuel, which further complicates matters. ServiceMaster Recovery Management is fully prepared for the most powerful and destructive storms. We have extensive experience and have helped commercial properties recover from some of the worst hurricanes in the United States’ history.
